Youngstown and YSU Police are searching for suspects in five armed robberies near the campus. Chris Davidson brings us an update.
Youngstown State University Police have increased patrol hours and are targeting certain areas to deter crime. The heightened police activity follows a series of armed robberies on the city’s north side, near campus.
YSU police chief John Beshara says robberies are frightening.
Robbery itself will be scary, but now you have somebody brandishing a firearm – it raises it to a different level
Chief Behsara says today’s technology interferes with what he calls “situational” or “environmental” awareness.
A smart phone’s buzzing, beeping, you got your radio, you’re playing on your phone, you’re texting, you’re emailing, you’re listening to music and you’re talking to the person next to you.
He says people need to be aware of what’s going on around them.
Put that phone down, take those ear buds out of your ears, quit texting and emailing.
Beshara says look and listen before you head into any situation.
I always say take a breath, just a breath, relax, look around.
But if you are accosted …
If they are going to take your property, cooperate and give them whatever they want, because property can always be replaced.
